Last week, our friends at CNN were preparing a story debating whether or not it was time for people to cancel their Greek vacation. As they wrote:

The looming threat of a “Grexit” scenario, in which Greece drops out of the eurozone and reverts to its old currency, the drachma, raises questions about how millions of vacationers will be affected.

Now, CNN clearly did its homework. Having spoken with countless experts and business owners from the tourism industry (including Discover Greek Culture!), the media outlet established that concerns about traveling in Greece were greatly exaggerated. But the hundreds of other international news stories that are published each day on the state of affairs in Greece often miss that deeper sense of perspective.

So here is our take: this is nothing to worry about. We’ve seen this all before.

This is neither the first nor the worst dramatic political moment that Greece has faced in the last few years. In fact, the current situation pales in comparison to the uncertainty and political tensions present in Greece during the summer of 2012—when an almost record number of tourists flocked to the country’s cultural sites and breathtaking shores.

This is not to downplay the importance of the political decisions and responsibility facing the Greek people as they prepare for a national referendum on the proposed financial rescue plan. The outcome of this vote will certainly impact the course of Greece’s future and even the path of the European project.

However, whether Greece emerges from next Sunday’s vote with a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ decision, the country will surely find its footing and chart a new way forward, as it has at every juncture over the course of this crisis. Most important, whatever the outcome, the Greek people will continue to do what it does best: welcoming guests from all over the world with wide open-arms, state-of-the-art tourist infrastructure and totally unforgettable experiences.

We therefore invite you to seize this opportunity. Join us here in Greece and discover the people and places that truly set this country apart from the rest. Experience the richness and beauty of Greek culture at one of the most important crossroads in its modern history.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
