Discover Greek Culture is a pioneer in Greek cultural tourism. Yet, a lot of people ask us, “What exactly is cultural tourism?”

That can be a difficult question to answer, for few people can agree on a standard definition of ‘culture,’ yet alone ‘cultural tourism.’

Perhaps the best definition of the industry we’ve come across is the following:

“Cultural tourism is the movement of persons to cultural attractions away from their normal place of residence, with the intention to gather new information and experiences to satisfy their cultural needs.”

-Greg Richards, Cultural Tourism in Europe

We like this definition because it reminds us that our visitors are not just seeking a holiday in Greece, they are seeking to gain (and bring back) new information and experiences that they can then carry throughout their life.

Still, we believe that something essential is lacking from this definition. Cultural tourism is not just about meeting “cultural needs,” as if checking attractions off a list. For us, cultural tourism reaches something deeper inside us; it provides an understanding of the fundamental commonalities found throughout the world’s differing societies. In a global community of stark diversity, it reminds us of shared humanity.

When we take tourists throughout Greece, we stress these commonalities; the shared connections and challenges that stretch from our society today all the way back through the ages. From archaeological excavations to the political tribulations of post-independence Greece to the visual expressions of today’s Athenian artists, we hope that by digging a bit deeper into Greek culture our guests can discover more about themselves in the process.
